Yielding to God’s Call: Jeremiah

“O Sovereign LORD,” I said, “I can’t speak for You! I’m too young!” (Jeremiah 1:6).

Jeremiah was given an intimidating task. Speaking on behalf of God in a world overflowing with idolatry was a frightening assignment. God was commissioning Jeremiah, who was probably a teenager at the time, as his own royal messenger to the leaders of the Kingdom of Judah.

God chose to call an unlikely person to do a very significant task. But although Jeremiah had received marching orders from God; he was a youngster living amongst a people who would see his message as threatening to their lifestyle of pleasure and leisure. It’s not surprising that Jeremiah claimed, “I can’t speak for you Lord! I’m too young!

Yielding to God’s call on your life involves putting away the fear of inadequacy. We sometimes think that in order to be effective for God we have to have had a set of certain experiences. We think that we aren’t ready to accomplish God’s call on our lives because we aren’t the self-proclaimed authorities on issues of morality and culture in our day.

But though we may not be qualified in the world’s eyes, God promises us as he did for Jeremiah that He would provide the words for us to speak. He speaks through us His words and with his words come his authority. God granted Jeremiah the ability to speak with authority to the public concerning God’s plan and character.

Overcoming the fear of inadequacy involves the revelation that when we’ve been commissioned to speak on God’s behalf; he provides the strength and credentials. My inadequacy is overwritten by the authority of the one who sends me. God speaks and we are his messengers.

The Lord has a message to share with every neighbor, every city, and every nation of the world. Yielding to God’s call is to yield to his message. Yielding to his message is to yield your strength and allow him to provide his strength. God has something he wants to say through you; let him work and flow through you with his power.
